Concrete ship afloat, awaiting demolition
For the past 63 years, the SS C.W. Pasley sat on the bottom of Yaquina Bay at McLean Point. On Wednesday, the World War II-era reinforced concrete cargo ship floated for the first time in more than six decades, the remnants of her disintegrating hull looking much like a bombed-out war casualty.
Josh Malik, the project engineer for Tualatin-based contractor Natt McDougall Company (NMC), said it would take about eight weeks for crews working on the Port of Newport International Terminal renovation project to turn what's left of the ship into rubble, consigning her final remains to use as fill in future port projects.
